Definition of Subculture
The word 'culture' in the subculture refers to a whole way of life that can be understood by its members. The word 'sub' has a special connotation and difference from the dominant or mainstream culture. According to Fitrah Hamdani in Zaelani Tammaka (2007: 164) "Subcultures are cultural symptoms in advanced industrial societies which are generally formed by age and class. Symbolically expressed in the form of the creation of style (style) and is not just an opposition to hegemony or a way out of a social tension ".
Subculture is further a part of the space for adherents to form an identity that gives autonomy in an increasingly rigid and blurred social order of industrial society. Sociologically, a member of a subculture usually shows their membership with certain lifestyles or symbols. Therefore, subcultural studies often include studies of symbolism (clothing, music and behavior of members of sub-culture) and how these symbols are interpreted by their parent culture in their learning. Literally, a subculture consists of two words. Sub which means part, part and culture of habit and habituation. But conceptually, a subculture is a movement or activity or behavior (collective) or part of a large culture. Which is usually used as a form of resistance to the mainstream culture. Can be in the form of resistance to anything; religion, country, institutions, music, lifestyle and everything that is considered mainstream.
The Concept of Subculture in Society
The concept of subculture is a concept that is constantly moving which is constitutive of the object of study. It is a classifikaoris terminology that tries to map the social world in an act of representation. Subcultures do not exist as authentic objects, but are suggested by subculture theorists. Culture is a subculture refers to the whole way of life or the map of meaning that makes the world easily understood by its members. The word "sub" contains the connotation of a unique and different condition compared to the dominant or mainstream society.
The attribute that defines the subculture, in turn, lies in how access is placed on the differences between certain cultural or social groups with the culture or wider society. The emphasis is placed on variations of broader collectivity which are positioned equally, but not problematically, as norms, averages and are dominant. Subcultures with other words are looked down on or enjoy an awareness of differences. According to Thornton, the important understanding of the "sub" prefix is underground or underground layers. Subcultures are seen as spaces for distorted cultures to re-associate their positions or to gain a place for themselves. So that most subcultural theories related to resistance are increasingly apparent. Most of us assume and identify subcultures with an activity that is negative. In fact, if we know and are aware of the meaning and purpose of the word, the subculture is not always intended for negative things.
